Sukiyaki Western 23

$950.00

Only 15 left in stock - order soon!

Walter Lockwood’s photography is known to incorporate multiple values. In his latest series, “Sukiyaki Western” Lockwood blends elements such as cultural reference, eye catching imagery, shock value, pop iconography, and historic/art/political ideas.

Using the plasticity of the film/photography medium, Lockwood’s re-interpretation of “Spaghetti Western” as “Sukiyaki Western” demonstrates media and culture constantly and quickly consuming and re-creating itself. According to the artist, “By casting Asian actors as “Cowboys/Gunslingers” and using a palette as open and malleable as the western film genre, I am participating in and illustrating the dissolving of cultural values and reference points.”

Print sizes for this series range from 60x50 to 11x14. Images are from custom drum scan of medium format negative film. Final prints are custom fine art light jet prints. Scanning, retouching, and printing by The Icon.

Walter’s fine art imagery has won numerous awards and been selected by curators, galleries, and group shows internationally.  Recently and among others, his work has been auctioned at “Art Seen 3” to benefit AIDS research, an event juried by Howard Fox, Curator of Contemporary Art, LACMA, featured in the group show “Accessorize” at the Los Angeles Art Association curated by Peggy Fogelman, Director of Education and Interpretation for the Essex Peabody Museum, and shown at the London Photographic Association, London, UK. An upcoming Solo Show in Nov. 2008 at HAUS Gallery, Pasadena will feature “Sukiyaki Western”. Walter also works in the commercial and editorial photography industries.

Twenty three Sukiyaki Western images are now available in 11x14-sized limited edition prints signed and numbered by the artist. For larger sizes and mounting options, please send Walter an email. Each image is limited to a quantity of 15 regardless of size printed or mounting options. Prices increase as availability diminishes. The images may be displayed individually or as a series. The price displayed here is for the single image shown. Originally photographed on medium format film, the negatives were scanned using a crossfield drum scanner, color corrected by the artist, and custom printed for the ultimate in quality. Prints are created to museum standards by The Icon in Los Angeles as photographic "C Prints".

The pop version of a Western is no more real than the Lord
of the Rings. Shot by Italian directors with international
casts and crews overseas, “Spaghetti Westerns” were
highly creative “B” films meant to entertain. So the genre
is an open source that can incorporate just about any
idea, much like sci-fi, horror, or fantasy. Enter the Mandalorian.

The difference is, we somehow believe that the iconography
created by Leone, Eastwood, and others is somehow an
actual representation of 19th-century America.
Casting Asian actors as the gunslingers forces
reconsideration of our invented perception of cowboys
and the romanticized Western hero. If we accept the
Sukiyaki Western images for what they are, the same pure
entertainment as the original Italian versions, it affords us
the opportunity to dissolve cross-cultural boundaries.

Hopefully, progressive re-interpretations and simulations
of past work, current media, and life experience can move
us closer to greater equality, freedom of expression, and
tolerance.

Best of all, Sukiyaki Western was just a blast to shoot and
I got to make some of the cool imagery I love!
