The pop version of a Western is no more real than the Lord
of the Rings. Shot by Italian directors with international
casts and crews overseas, “Spaghetti Westerns” were
highly creative “B” films meant to entertain. So the genre
is an open source that can incorporate just about any
idea, much like sci-fi, horror, or fantasy. Enter the Mandalorian.

The difference is, we somehow believe that the iconography
created by Leone, Eastwood, and others is somehow an
actual representation of 19th-century America.
Casting Asian actors as the gunslingers forces
reconsideration of our invented perception of cowboys
and the romanticized Western hero. If we accept the
Sukiyaki Western images for what they are, the same pure
entertainment as the original Italian versions, it affords us
the opportunity to dissolve cross-cultural boundaries.

Hopefully, progressive re-interpretations and simulations
of past work, current media, and life experience can move
us closer to greater equality, freedom of expression, and
tolerance.

Best of all, Sukiyaki Western was just a blast to shoot and
I got to make some of the cool imagery I love!
